I was asked by AARP The Magazine, the largest circulation magazine in North America – reaching 38 million people 50 years and older, to write a story about my mother’s chocolate cake recipe I learned to make when I was a kid. The story ran in the December issue and I have been getting emails about it from readers ever since! Who knew such an innocent and delicious cake would elicit so much fervor and feedback? But then again, chocolate does that to people.
As a result, I have blogged about this a lot (click here to read my blog), AARP had to edit down the recipe to make it fit. Ironically, the edits created quite a stir, and I have received dozens of emails from frantic bakers across the country. Here are a few snippets:
“The recipe looked good but I don't know how you get 1 cup of boiling water, 4 oz of chopped chocolate and 1/2 cup of butter to combine into a smooth mix” - Jack
“I am curious as to why the cake would not come out of the pan (was I supposed to flour as well as grease?) and why the cake "fell"?” – Lillian
“Could there have been a typo on the frosting recipe? The recipe called for 1 1/2 cups of powdered sugar. Should it have been more? - Ken
“Just made the cake but it's very crumbly. Could I have beaten the eggs too much with the sugar, mixture was very bubbly. Beating by hand better?” – Joanne D.
I forward each email to my mother who has been making the cake with success each time. She and I were starting to get worried and depressed because we both love this recipe so much. Then thankfully we received this email:
“The reaction for this cake was overwhelming from my family. Do you have a recipe book in print for your mom's desserts? Please let me know so I can buy it immediately. It was awesome and thank you.” - Claire

Several people have since made the cake and sent me photos of their beautiful creations (above right) you see in this newsletter. I posted the complete recipe here along with tips to ensure yours turns out perfectly!
